The workers came up short on the chance to be educated regarding the transient objectives and progress, just as to get the extra discussion or guidelines. In expansion, the pioneer conveyed the assignments and jobs inside the task group without alluding to the employees’ position obligations. Certain colleagues were not talented enough to adjust their insight to the new zone and perform effectively. As indicated by De Vries, Bakker-Pieper, and Oostenveld (2010), such people experience a lot of pressure while adjusting to new conditions and can't exhibit high outcomes inside the brief timeframe. The pioneer didn't rouse workers to perform better in the new zone due to neglecting to give chances to preparing and adjustment (Schyns Schilling, 2013, p. 139). In this circumstance, the calendar was proposed without concentrating on such dangers as the powerlessness to workers to finish assignments before beginning the other venture stage. Accordingly, the absence of the vital observing and coordination prompted disappointments in tending to the venture cutoff times. The other significant issue is the presence of another casual pioneer because of the absence of the primary leader’s correspondence with the group (De Vries, Bakker-Pieper, Oostenveld, 2010, p. 369). The nonappearance of trust in the leader’s ability and achievement prompted assigning some initiative duties to the casual group pioneer at the last time of the task advancement. The explanation is that feeling the consistent pressure, representatives need support, and the casual participative initiative works better than the assignment arranged conventional administration in this case.Advertising Searching for contextual analysis on business financial aspects? The Impact of 4G LTE Technology on Customer Satisfaction in Metro

Essays on The Impact of 4G LTE Technology on Customer Satisfaction in Metro Atlanta Research Paper ï » ¿The Impact of 4G LTE Technology on customer satisfaction in Metro Atlanta Contents Chapter 4 2 Works Cited 11 Chapter 4 In the era of ‘consumerism’, most of the companies across the world are actively seeking strategic ways through which they can easily win over the loyalty of the consumers. This research paper analyzes the validity of huge investments, made by giant cellular companies (ATT, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile), in 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology. In the context of the analysis, the researcher tries to estimate the factors determining customer satisfaction in the mobile phone industry. For the purpose of analysis, the researcher had conducted a closed-ended questionnaire survey (18 questions) against a random sample of 50 individuals, living around the Metro Atlanta Area (Newman and Benz 155). These individuals are small business operators, students and corporate employees (Mankiw and Taylor 134). The analysis results are as follows: Figure 1: Area of Habitat (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) The initial question, as stated in the above figure, was placed to 50 individuals. Out the total, 45 responded positively and 5 claimed that they did not live near the Metro Atlanta Area. Majority of the individuals lived near the most popular Metro Area in U.S. Thus, it can be assumed that these are the customers, who are potential users of wireless cellular phones (with 4G technology). Figure 2: Sample Age Distribution (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) When the question regarding ages of the individuals was placed, it was found that about 31 of them were middle-aged, belonging to the age group of 30 to 49 years. The second maximum was the group of individuals falling within the age group of 25 to 29 years. This shows that majority of the sample observations comprises individuals who are likely to be employed and thus, are potential demand creators of technological gadgets with 4G LTE technology. Moreover, the Standard Deviation (S.D.) for ages of the sample individuals was only 8.4 (this proves that all are likely to possess the purchasing power of creating a demand for an expensive gadget) (Hirsch 45). Figure 3: Gender Distribution (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) As stated in the above pie chart, all the 50 individuals were women. Figure 4: Smart Phone Use (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) It was noted that all the 50 individuals claimed to possess Smartphones. Figure 5: Mobile Capability for using LTE Technology (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) As stated in the above graph it was found that the Smartphone’s of all the individuals were capable to adopt the 4 G technologies in their mobiles. Figure 6: Smartphone Lifespan (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) All the individuals had claimed that their Smartphones were only one to two years old. This proves that all of them are aware of the usage and value of 4G technologies in their mobiles. Figure 7: Cellular Network (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) All the 50 individuals commented that their cellular networks were of ATT Company. Figure 8: Wireless Plan (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) As stated in the above pie diagram, all the individuals in the sample were found to use wireless plans that included a special data feature (internet accessible package). On the basis of the analysis till now, it can be stated that the popularity of using Smartphones has received a very high response from the sample. So, it is obvious that these individuals, who have recently purchased Smartphones, have the access to 4G network and internet in their wireless cellulars. All of them are customers of the company of ATT. Figure 9: Mobile Network Satisfaction (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) Thus, when a question was raised at these individuals, regarding the quality of internet service provided by their mobile network (in this case, ATT), it was noted that 66.7 % were very satisfied and the remaining 33.3% claimed that the service was moderate (33.3%). This indicates that the company of ATT still needs to make improvements in quality of internet service provided through its network (Tucker 194). Figure 10: Customer Service Contacts (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) It was found that, out of all the individuals included in the sample, 50% of them claimed that they contacted customer service, if they were unsatisfied with the quality of services. On the other hand, the rest 50% claimed to not register their complaints to customer service on an event of poor service of the network (Fama 288-307). When the individuals were asked regarding the customer service quality, about 91.7% (33 individuals) of them claimed that their mobile network related problems were always solved by the customer service. However, about 11.1% (4) of the individuals (out of the 36 individuals responded to the question) claimed that their mobile-related problems were not resolved, even after registering complaints. Figure 11: Cellular Carrier (Source: â€Å"Report Analysis†) Out of all the individuals, about 38% of them claimed that they would continue to use their existing cellular carrier in future. On the other hand, about 10% of the individuals were unaware or confused regarding this decision. This proves that if the majority of the individuals are assumed to use the network of ATT, then the company can afford to lose almost 20% share of customer demand in future, if it does not improve the required business areas. Nonetheless, it should be noted that customers were not able to provide a reason for such a response. Therefore, from the above analysis, it can be summarized that customers, living in modern urbanized locations, are primarily users of Smartphones with advanced features. Among all the mobile network providers, ATT is the most popular one. However, in terms of technological gadgets, the consumers’ satisfaction substantially depends on after-sales customer service quality. A large proportion of individuals are not satisfied with the modern 4G LTE connection because they face complexities in adapting and using such modern applications. Chapter 5 In the modern era, with the rise in the scope of commercial activities, the per capita income thresholds and living standards of individuals have significantly improved. Even so, with the rise in aggregate disposable incomes and demand thresholds, the degree of competition among business firms has increased. At present, the different mobile phone companies like, ATT, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, in the market are subjected to cut-throat competition (Glisic 188). This is the sole reason for which these firms have augmented their investment levels in new technological innovations. It is true that such huge investments help companies to serve customers with enhanced quality products, thereby increasing their satisfaction levels. However, it should also be noted that the nature of customer service, provided by the companies, is a primary driving force to manipulate the level of customer demand. It is, thus, expected that if the customer service team of a mobile phone company can success fully address to all the problems regarding customers’ mobile usage, then the company can actually enjoy the perks of making new innovations in business in the long run. The aggregate wireless telephone services provided by the company of A TT have improved by only 1% from 2012 to 2013. The company is lagging behind three of its market rivals (Sprint, Wireless Telephone Service and Verizon Wireless) by only 686 points out of 750 total points. It is, thus, expected that a few strategic measures can surely help the company in leading the industry. It should be noted that the company is among the leading providers of the latest 4G Technology. The organization can enjoy the true benefits of this investment, provided it tries to improve its after-sales customer service quality. This is considered as the primary determining factor of customer satisfaction in this research work (from the report analysis) (Woodford 202). Wander round this virtual mall and find products and services of all types. Not only will you find US favorites but you will be surprised how many items that can be bought within our borders. While both paragraphs need to be brief and quickly catch the reader’s attention, I feel the website needs to be even more to the point. A member of the human resources staff, at times, has to view 20 plus resumes and pick the best candidate. A web viewer, on the other hand, has unlimited data at their finger tips and with the click of a mouse can be â€Å"light years† away from your opening paragraph. With this in mind the resume paragraph is constructed of complex professionally based sentences while the web add is quick concise and to the point. I feel the internet age has added a whole new challenge to writers and what once was considered a tight and to the point paragraph is now a virtual novel. Simple things like eliminating the periods and spaces of the abbreviation U. S. , although not grammatically correct, make the paragraph read quicker and may help to â€Å"click† the attention of the web surfer.

The Mongols Essays - Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan, Mongols

The Mongols It has been said that the Mongols were the most cruel and barbaric of the peoples that have roamed this earth. My research paper is on the greatest of the Mongols, Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan was, even in the lightest sense, a military genius. Genghis Khan almost conquered the world. He instilled in humankind a fear that lasted for ages. But what drove him to do it? Was it by chance? This paper will explain how the general's childhood molded the man into the best war general of the known world. The Mongols originally consisted of loosely organized nomadic tribes. (Nomadic refers to a tribe whose members wander and travel around, never staying in one place very long). They were considered barbarians, by European standards. They had no written language, and they were uneducated, except in warfare. Their land was in the most sense barren, for it was the Gobi Desert. In the Gobi, weather could change at a moments notice, from scorching heat to blustering cold. To protect themselves from the unforgiving cold, the Mongols smeared themselves with oil and grease. This offered sufficient protection, but they had to still worry about the wind, for the desert was barren, and with no trees to divert the wind, the gusts were sometimes enough to make riding on horseback difficult. Their culture was very unique. In the spring, meat, fur, and milk were abundant. In the winter, however, it was not. The Mongols evidently did not care much for their children, for they did not sacrifice their food for them. Whenever food was brought in during the winter, all of it was put in the a pot and then the order of people got it. The order of people were - the able-bodied men taking the first portions, the aged and the women received the pot next, and the children had to fight for the rest (Lamb 23). When there was a shortage of cattle, the children didn't survive so easily. Milk, one of their chief sources of nutrition, existed only in the form of kumiss, milk put in leather satchels, fermented and beaten. It was nourishment, and also intoxicating, especially to a kid of three or four years (Lamb 26). Their fires were not fueled by wood, since trees were scarce in the desert. Instead, it was fueled by cattle and horse dung, which had to make for a certainly unpleasant smell. When festivals came about, as they rarely did, big piles of dung were lit and the same order of the eating applied to the fire, with the women sometimes being able to sit! on the left of the fire. The children were not introduced to hardship; they were born into it. After they were weaned from their mothers milk to mare's milk, they were expected to manage almost entirely for themselves. The children learned to live by themselves, in houses, called yurts and they learned to organize hunts, stalking dogs and rats, beating them with crude, blunt clubs and arrows. They also learned to ride sheep by holding on to the wool. The yurts were made of felt, animal skin shaved close, stretched over wooden sticks, with an opening at the top to let out the smoke. Page 3 The felt was covered with white lime, and pictures were drawn onto it. This tent was serviceable, for its dome shaped top allowed it to resist the high winds (Fox 29). Endurance was life for the young Genghis Khan, called at birth Temujin, or "The Finest Steel". It was a name given to him by his father, the name of an enemy taken prisoner. Temujin's father was the Khan of the Yakka, or Great, Mongols. He had control of over 47,000 tents and his name was Yesukai (Lamb 24). Temujin had numerous duties, just as did the other boys of the camp. They had to fish the streams that the family passed on their trek. They looked after the family's horses, learning out of necessity to stay in the saddle for several days at a time, and to survive without food for three to four days. The boys watched the skyline for raiders and spent many nights in the snow without a

Should You Really Go to College Out of State Pros and Cons

Should You Really Go to College Out of State Pros and Cons SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips One of the most important decisions you'll make in the college research process is where in the country to focus your search. Going to school out of state has its benefits, but is an out-of-state college the right choice for you? In this article, I’ll give you the general pros and cons of attending an out-of-state college and provide some guidance on whether you should apply. What’s the Difference Between Out-of-State and In-State Colleges? Out-of-state colleges differ from in-state colleges mainly in the fact that they’re, well, not in your home state. The term â€Å"in-state colleges† is primarily used to refer to public universities in your home state because this usually means a lower tuition price tag.For private colleges, in-state and out-of-state tuition are usually the same. The two main qualities that differentiate out-of-state colleges from in-state colleges are that out-of-state colleges are farther away from your hometown and more expensive than in-state colleges. Pros and Cons of Out-of-State Colleges Pros You’ll be able to explore a new area and get outside your comfort zone. You’ll meet more people from different backgrounds and be more incentivized to make new friends. You’ll have more independence and get a feel for what it’s like to live on your own. Tons of choices! If you’re open to attending college out of state, you’ll have a huge range of different types of schools to choose from and won’t be limited by what your state offers. Cons You'll pay a higher tuition price for an out-of-state college than you would for an in-state public university. You’ll miss out on any savings you might get from living at home and commuting to an in-state school. You’ll be further away from home, so you won’t be able to rely on your family for support as muchor see your old friends as often. You might feel isolated or lonely in an unfamiliar place. First, how important is the cost of college to you and your family?Out-of-state tuition is usually pricier than in-state tuition. The average tuition price is $9,139 for in-state students and $22,958 for out-of-state students (both at public colleges). If you plan on attending a private college, however, in state and out-of-state tuition rates will be more similar.Discuss financing college with your family and do some research. To reduce your student debt, you may decide that an in-statepubliccollegeis the bestoption. You should also ask yourself how far from home you want to be for college. Some students deal with the transition from high school to college better than others, and it can be tough to be in an unfamiliar place without access to your usual support system.During other times of change in your life, such as switching to a new school or moving to a new town, did you adapt well or did you struggle? This should give you clues as to how you might deal with settling into a new environment in college. If you think you’ll be all too happy to be away from your family and start meeting new people, you may thrive at an out-of-state school where you can re-establish your identity. Dye your hair purple, get a mohawk, and never look back. Other foundations by Maybelline offer a combination of matte, natural, luminous and shimmer finishes (Maybelline LLC.). Maybelline sells to the mass market and has major competitors such as Revl on, Covergirl and Avon pitted against it in this segment. As far as Avon is concerned, it has global representation in approximately more than 100 countries and is also headquartered in New York (Avon Products Inc.). Avon’s internal strengths are that it has a strong business model that allows it to differentiate itself against competitors. It also had been doing fairly well and has had a steady increase in revenue throughout history. However, the primary weakness is that the company has been facing declining operations in the North American region, primarily as it has not been able to pace up with fast changing customer trends in this region.

Economics School-Based Assessment Essay Example for Free

Economics School-Based Assessment Essay Introduction LIME, an acronym for Landline, Internet, Mobile, Entertainment, is owned by the British based Cable Wireless Communications. The company formed from the integrated businesses of Cable Wireless in the Caribbean which adopted the LIME name on 3rd of November 2008. With people spending a lot of time accomplishing tasks and doing researches, the internet has becomevery important to individuals nowadays. Without the internet some individuals think that they cannot survive because of how it is used to provide a variety of information and communication facilities in order to get the work done quickly and/or enjoy one’s self with family and friends. People are becoming very lazy and find it difficult to open a book to find information, so instead they use the internet to gather the information quickly. Businesses also use the internet to do market researches and many other activities. The internet has basically any and every thing. More than 50% of homes in Jamaica has internet and for those that cannot afford the internet, the Government has provided facilities to them. With people wanting to send or receive emails, use search engine to gather information, looking for hobby or interest on the web.I have decided to do an investigationof the Internet Service industry within Jamaica with reference specifically to LIME . Acknowledgement I would like to thank everyone who would have contributed to the completion of this School-Based Assessment. First of all I would like to thank God firstly for the opportunity to do such a project and also for the wisdom, strength and understanding to complete this assignment. Other people who I would like to thank are: My Economics teacher for her constant advices and willingness to help. All those who answered the questionnaires distributed. My family for helping and supporting me during the execution of this project. Objectives of research The aims of this investigation are: 1. To establish the type of relationship there is between price and quantity demanded for internet service at LIME. 2. To examine of the principal factors affecting the demand of LIME and Flow 3. To examine the price elasticity of demand of internet service at LIME and Flow 4. To determine whose internet service can mainly be found in form 5 of the St. Martins secondary school. 5. To briefly examinethe market structure for internet service in Jamaica. 6. To briefly examine the market conditions affecting the supply of internet service at LIME and Flow in Jamaica. Methodology:The SBA was conducted in my community. Primary Sources: 1. Questionnaire: Twenty questionnaires were shared out to students in form 5 of the St. Martin’s secondary school. 2. Interview:The managers of LIME and Karib Cable were interviewed to obtain information such as how they attract customers to their business. Secondary Sources: 1. Textbooks: Economics textbooks were used to have a clear understanding of the Laws of Demand and Supply. 2. Internet: The websites listed in the bibliography were used to further clarify economic concepts to enhance the school-based assessment. 20 questionnaires were given to the students of form 5 in the Community of. Two interviews were conducted with the managers of LIME and Flow outlets inOchi rios. The internet service industry in Jamaica is one of an Oligopoly market structure. Thus, there are only a few large firms, Homogeneous or differentiated products, imperfect knowledge of the market, they are price makers with price rigidity and also have many buyers. As such, there are little competition levels which ideally lead to the producers satisfaction and welfare. After the data were collected from the questionnaire, I discovered that all the participants were between the ages of 16-17. The study as shown that LIME’s internet service was the most  demanded internet service in Guys hill. Question 1 )10 of the students who were given questionnaires had access to the internet at their homes. This may due to the addiction to social networking or the need of having the internet to gather information. Since the internet is the quickest way of gathering information and communicating with others the demand for internet would be high. Question 2: In question (2) 60% of the students said that they have LIME’s internet service while 40% have Flow internet service. The fact that more students preferred LIME’s internet service shows that some method of attracting customers that Flow is lacking. Based on the supply information gained from the interviews, these methods include the sponsoring of events and other methods. Effective use of these methods can increase the demand for internet, lower production cost, will result in a decrease cost price and lead to an extension of demand, all of which increases a firm’s profits. Question 3: The question â€Å"Who pays for the internet you have access to† was asked in question 3. Majority (80%) of the students said that they parents pays for the internet while the other 20% said that their grandparents pays for the internet. This shows that even students may have the desire and the willingness to pay for the internet service; they are not backed by t he ability to pay for it. Question 4: All (20) of the students said that the person who pays for the internet at their home currently has a job. This shows that persons who have jobs are the ones who have ability to pay for internet service at their homes. Question 5: In relation to question 5 responses, 16 of the persons who pay for the internet are full-time employees while the other 4 are part-time. The 16 full-time employees who might be eligible for benefitshave LIME’s internet service and this might be so maybe because of personal preference and wanting top quality service. Question 6: 16 students said that the person who pays for their internet occupational classification is white collar while the other 4 said its blue collar. The 4 blue collar workers internet service provider is Flow, which shows that people who receive less income prefers Karib Cables internet service maybe because of the price of the service. Question 7: In relation to question 8, 18 of the students use the internet mostly for social networking while the other 2 uses it for information. Sites like facebook  and twitter are social networking sites that enable users to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images, ect and these sites have become the most popular website on the internet. So therefore students may have a deep desire to have internet service to use these sites. Question 8: According to question 7 90% of the students use the internet on a daily basis. Based on the questionnaire this is due to addiction to social networking by these students. The other 10% uses it weekly and this is due to the need of gathering information. Question 9: In question 9 the question was asked â€Å"What is the main factor of choosing your internet service provider?† Many factors affect the demand for a specific internet service such as preference, price of the internet and advertisement. 60% of the students said that it’s because of preference while the other 40% said that it’s because of price of the internet service. This may be so because people may have a greater liking for a certain internet service because of its reliability. No onewants to be experiencing difficulties with the internet while surfing. Question 10: 8 persons said that they pay a price range of $800-$1000 while12 persons said that they pay from $1300-$1500 According to the information on the questionnaires the 12 persons who pays at the price range of $1300-$1500 internet service provider is Lime, which shows that flows rates are a little cheaper than LIME’s rates. Question 11: All of the students internet speed is 1 megabyte per sec. Although LIME and flow provides 4mbps, which is a lot faster than 1mbps shows that people only have the ability to pay for 1mbps a month. Question 12: According to question 12, 60% of these students don’t experience any problems at times, while the other 40% experiences problems. The 60% of students who don’t experience any problems internet service provider is LIME. This means that even though LIME’s rates are a little more expensive, they provide better service than Flow and that is why LIME attracts more customers to their services. The fact that LIME’s internet service is more expensive may due to the cost of production. Question 13: 6 of the students who experience problems said that they experience slow internet at times, while the other 2 students said that at times they don’t have internet at times. Question 14: In relation to question 14 these problems were experienced daily by 25% of these student, 25% weekly and 50% of the students who experience problems experiences monthly. Question 15: The question â€Å"If the price for your internet was $1000 a month for 1MBPS (Mega Bytes per Second), you would purchase â€Å"20% of the students said that they would purchase 2mbps at $1500 per month. This shows that persons have the desire and willingness to purchase 2mbps but they don’t have the ability to do so. Question 16: 50 % of the students showed willingness to purchase 2mbps at $1500 per month. As price increases from $1500 to $2000 for 2mbps, the quantity demanded decreased thus, the law of demand stands (as prices increase, demand decreases). The P.E.D was calculated as -0.15, indicating price inelasticity. As the price increases from $1500to $2000, demand also decreases and the Law of demand is also obeyed. The P.E.D. in this case was -0.3, thus indicating in another price inelasticity. Findings 1. There is a negative relationship between the prices of internet service and the quantity demanded. This simply means as price increases, quantity demanded decreases and as price decreases, the quantity demanded increases. 2. The principal factor affecting for internet service is one’s preference. 3. Internet service is price inelastic, therefore the quantity demanded is unresponsive to changes in price. 4. The existence of foreign firms (LIME) in the local economy can create good competition and result in higher consumer satisfaction. Recommendations Both LIME and Flow can endeavor into improving in the following areas if they haven’t already done so in order to boost sales and have a better competitive stance: Flow should use suggestion boxes to get feedback from customers about problems they face. Increase advertising to make the customers to have a greater liking for their internet service since preference is the factor affecting demand. The government should open up the market for internet service further. This would add to competition. Competition would lower prices and also keep money in the country since LIME is owned by the British base money is most likely exported out of the country. Sponsor more events that are taken place in the country. Sell 2MBPS at cheaper rates since more people are demanding 2MBPS. Conclusion In this investigation between LIME and Flow, I have come to realize the major role that economics plays in the operation of a business. It was deduced that LIME is a better internet service provider than Flow since bigger consumer market and their customers experience no problems. King Louis XIV: A Disastrous Ruler Essay -- European History Essays

King Louis XIV: A Disastrous Ruler It is often debated whether or not the reign of King Louis XIV had a positive or negative effect on France. Although there were improvements during his reign in transportation, culture, and national defense, there were far more negative aspects. He depleted the national treasury with his liberal spending on personal luxuries and massive monuments. His extreme fear of the loss of power led to poor decision making, which caused the court to be of lower quality. King Louis XIV’s disastrous rule brought about a series of effects that influenced the French Revolution in the following century. King Louis XIV's 72 year reign was incredibly influential in shaping French history. King Louis XIV’s childhood was traumatic because of â€Å"La Fronde† which was a noble rebellion against the monarchy. This experience taught King Louis XIV to distrust the nobles. It was for this reason that he eventually excluded nobility from the council and surrounded himself with loyal ministers whom he could control. He also separated the aristocracy from the people of France by moving the court to the Palace of Versailles. One of the most notable of King Louis XIV’s decisions was that he refused to appoint another Prime Minister after the death of Prime Minister Mazarin. Every decision, from the declaration of war to the approval of a passport, went through him personally. During his reign as king, France participated in several wars including the War of Devolution, in Anglo-Dutch War, and the War of the Spanish Succession. Another major action he took was the proclamation of the Edict of Fontainebleau, which revoked the Edict of Nantes, imposing religious uniformity through Catholi... ...roblems and turned a great number of people against the monarchy. These events lead to the resentment that was another key factor in beginning the French Revolution. The end of King Louis XIV’s rule was especially disastrous. After the death of his advisor Colbert, King Louis XIV made even more horrible and costly decisions. He further enlarged the military and entered into many wars in which he lost a great deal of her newly acquired territories and increased the national debt even more. In short, the reign of King Louis XIV had a disastrous impact on France. His liberal spending, appointing of easily controlled people to court, revoking the freedom of religion, and poor decision making sparked the economic burdens and resentment of the aristocracy that were major factors in the French Revolution and the eventual downfall of the French monarchy.

Poverty in America Essay

Poverty is an epidemic that has swept the American nation many times over. Whether it be quietly lingering under the surface, or blatantly staring us in the face as it is in this current recession, it affects people across America on individual, community and national levels alike. While there are many causes and effects of poverty, it is important to view the issue of poverty and its causes from all angles when one seeks to tackle the problem. These factors include socio-economic status, mental illness, family values and work ethics, to name a few. In this essay, I will be examining these factors as they are discussed in the book, The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls (referred to as Glass Castle throughout essay), as well as in the article Poverty in America from the Congressional Digest, December 2010 (referred to as Census throughout the essay). When children are born into poverty, it is the only life they know. They often grow up to either see life from the viewpoint of, â€Å"that’s just the way it is,† or become determined to better their status when they are old enough to do so. Children don’t often realize they live in poverty until they are told by their peers, such as when they are called poor and see people taking pity on them or make fun of them. They may also realize they are different when they are exposed to what other people have and realize that they have much less. As noted in Poverty in America, poverty level, in itself, is merely based on an income deficit, whereas one’s household receives less money than another; it also relates to the standard of living (Census, pg. 300). When one has less income, less things are afforded, however living within those means will often create or hide the barrier that is poverty. While one family may learn to utilize their resources effectively and appropriate funds where they belong, another will attempt to make fast money such as through crime or gambling. As in the story of the Glass Castle, the father spends the money the family has on gambling, sometimes paying off and spending the money on lavish dinners out and treats; other times they are deeper in poverty since gambling funds are not the most stable income (Glass Castle, p. Living in Las Vegas). Addictions and mental illness have impacted the nation and led many families into poverty. While not directly discussed in the article, it may be  presumed that these issues play a role in keeping people from holding jobs, working full time and gain the skills necessary to find gainful employment. The article cites work experience and less-than-full-time workers as being affected by increased poverty rates, especially in this recent economic downturn. Additionally, whereas it was normal for a single mother to stay home and care for her children in the 1950’s when the poverty census was first started, it is expected now for single parents to work and better their economic status for the well-being of their family. With the costs of daycare and living skyrocketing since the 50’s, women sometimes seek easier means of making money and still staying at home, including prostitution and drug dealing. Many of these women were also sexually abused and preyed upon because of th eir economic status and other issues affecting their childhood, which may lead to substance abuse in adolescence and early adulthood. Sexual abuse was a prominent theme in the Glass Castle, as the parents were very hands-off and flighty, leaving the children exposed to predators and even victim to family members. While Jeanette’s parents felt that the children will only become stronger by facing hardship, these factors will often cause self-esteem, trauma, depression and anxiety in children who grow up into alcohol and drug abusing adults; this may also begin the poverty cycle for generations to come. The cycle of poverty being exacerbated by drug and alcohol use is first noted in the Glass Castle with insight into Rex’s drinking problems. While he has attempts at periods of sobriety, he always returns to the bottle. It is apparent that he has dreams of grandeur, always telling the children that they will one day live in a glass castle, going so far as to build blueprints. He is a self-proclaimed inventor and thinks very highly of his skills and self, but is constantly losing jobs and sweeping the family away to avoid the law. While he has the emotional support of his family, he is battling his own demons of feeling like a failure, leading him to steal his wife’s money, gamble profusely and even takes steps toward selling his own daughter for a quick buck (Glass Castle, pg. rex takes to bar to play pool, win money back). He also seeks the comfort of a prostitute, probably to have the company of someone who makes him feel better about himself (Glass Castle, pg. Brian tells Jeanette about reading comic while Rex/Ginger were  in hotel). It’s also interesting to examine the impact of the sexual abuse Rex may have been exposed to as a child by his mother, which could have been the start to his cycle of living in a dream-world, using alcohol and low self-esteem (pg. when they tell Rex Erma tried to molest Brian and wonder if he was abused). Beyond addiction issues, mental health problems were also a focus of the Glass Castle, as it appears that Mary was, deep inside, a solid person with a good family upbringing, an education and was probably capable of being a good mother. Unfortunately, she was an â€Å"excitement addict† (Glass Castle, pg. inherited house in phoenix) and even gave up her teaching job to be an artist (Glass Castle, p. Mary returns from Bluefield), even though her children were starving. She also followed her husband through all of these adventures, partaking in all the excitement and neglect/abuse of the children, seemingly oblivious to any wrongdoing. Following the periods of excitement addiction, she would have depressed moods, staying in bed and complaining of the burden of raising a family and missing out on her chance to be an artist (Glass Castle, p. when they find diamond ring). It would appear to me that, while Mary has her times of trying to do what’s best for her family, she may be suffering from a mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, making choices that are mostly selfish to fulfill her fun and excitement; she also makes very poor financial choices for her family, such as not selling the million-dollar property to feed her family (Glass Castle, pg. Mary wants to borrow money from Eric to buy adjacent land) and not using money from work to stick with a budget so that food and indoor plumbing and coal can be bought (Glass Castle, pg. Mary is teaching and Lori and Jeanette make a budget and ask to hold money). In addition, mental illness is often thought to be genetic, with some syndromes passing through generations. While most of the children in the Walls family eventually become successful adults with seemingly normal lives, Maureen adapts some of the characteristics of her parents, ultimately ending up living a bizarre life of chasing cults a nd getting locked up in a state hospital (Glass Castle, p. Maureen stabs Mary). Family values play a large role in bringing, and keeping, people in poverty; especially families. Although there have been separate social classes throughout history, values and work ethics are two factors that can change over time and create a different outcome of values and ethics. Through the article, the reader learns that recessions have caused disparities at different levels since the census began recording this material in 1959 (Census, p. 298). While each recession has differed slightly, the length and severity of increased poverty has happened in different extents, leading one to believe that the values/ethics of the time may be affecting how people handle changes in their economic situations; how families handle ongoing poverty over generations will also determine the overall success of that family coming out of poverty or remaining in it. The work ethics and values were definitely confused throughout the Glass Castle, with Rex having a history of serving in the Air Force and Mary being educated in teaching and falling back on that from time to time, barely keeping the metaphoric family head above water. There is also question about the values that are being taught to the children; where one parent proclaims to be a devout catholic that doesn’t attend church or follow the commandments and another parent despises and puts down the religion. Other family values that the children are exposed to include shoplifting (Glass Castle, p. where they steal dresses and get caught) and stealing from the bank (Glass Castle, p. where dad and mom are stealing money), as well as stealing lunches at school and dumpster diving; all of this yet Mary refuses to even consider government aid when the idea is mentioned, presenting herself as better than that. Also, family traditions that the children see other people participating are often ruined (Glass Castle, p. where dad lights tree on fire) and the family learns to deal with it by just understanding there is nothing they can do. Hope still remains for those in poverty. We know that, economically, everything that goes up must come down, and when it comes to the economy, the opposite is likely to occur as well. As the Census shows us on p. 298, while poverty levels have dropped and risen over the past five decades, they do resume along with the economy and each person in poverty still has a chance at changing their situation if they work hard enough. The coping  skills that people learn when they live a life of poverty to effectively live within their means prioritize can make or break the future options they have before them. As the Walls children show us, one can change their future when they put their mind to it. The children lived through so many experiences of suffering and neglect, and were always trying to help their parents get it together so they could have a better life. While the children learned to cope with their parent’s ways, they also were intelligent and ambitious, and having been taught to dream, they were able to imagine a better future and a higher standard of living. While poverty has been an ongoing issue, there are many causes and facto s associated with this social construct, and many ways to overcome it. In this essay, which combined poverty information from the 2010 Census and the book, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the effects of mental illness, addiction, family values and work ethics on poverty were discussed and examined. The overall conclusion of this writer would be that poverty can be overcome as long as individuals are willing to help themselves and their dep endents and overcome the obstacles that they face in order to create a better outcome.
